The days when small fire departments could do everything on their own are numbered, Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan has told Charlemont Selectboard members and firefighters.

The Greenfield fire chief was asked to speak at a Charlemont Selectboard and Fire Department meeting earlier this week, where town officials talked about budget constraints, the lack of trained volunteer firefighters, and the rising calls for ambulance and fire services in a town with a growing elderly population, a growing outdoor recreation industry and a low rate of young volunteers willing or able to put in the 100 hours of basic firefighter training.
